The discipline of simplicity has an external component to it that is not found in the disciplines of engaging scripture, prayer, rest, and silence and solitude. Such disciplines can be practiced without anyone else knowing. The discipline of simplicity, though, while motivated by an inner desire that others do not see, involves outer actions and external behavior that others cannot help but see.
