We have to discipline ourselves to serve, just like we have to discipline ourselves to rest, pray, engage Scripture, practice silence and solitude, and live simply. When it comes to the discipline of serving, we have to decide to do that which is right and good, but which doesn’t come natural for many of us. Through the discipline of service, the Holy Spirit teaches us to put the needs of others before ourselves, and in so doing, trains us for purposes of godliness and righteousness.
